New dSPACE solution for sensor simulation: AURELION

Validate sensors of autonomous vehicles through virtual test drives.

With AURELION, dSPACE is launching a new sensor simulation including high-resolution visualization for testing and validating functions for autonomous driving. The solution, which can be operated either in the cloud or locally by the users, generates photorealistic images for camera simulation in real time and an exact environment for radar and lidar simulation using ray tracing. With AURELION, developers can simulate algorithms for autonomous driving during virtual test drives long before a prototype hits the road.

AURELION can be used in all phases of the development process – for example in software-in-the-loop (SIL) tests, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) tests or in parallel validation in the cloud. The solution supports the development of artificial intelligence-based functionalities and training data, including training and testing of neural networks.

A powerful 3D rendering engine, high-precision dSPACE simulation models, and realistic 3D assets such as pedestrians or vehicles enable precise simulation of sensors, environments, weather conditions, brightness conditions (day, night), and materials. Developers can thus simulate a large number of scenarios and test corner cases that rarely occur in real test drives.

AURELION accesses an extensive library of sensor models that is always up-to-date. In this way, new sensors can be reproduced in simulation solutions long before they come onto the market. To this end, dSPACE has entered into partnerships with the world’s leading sensor manufacturers and is continuously expanding its collaboration with developers of camera, lidar, and radar technology. It is also possible to integrate third-party sensor models.

The new solution bundles functionalities of the dSPACE applications MotionDesk and SensorSim in a single new product and also offers extended functionalities and more precision in the area of sensor simulation. In combination with other dSPACE tools such as the ASM simulation models, the VEOS simulation platform, and ModelDesk for parameterization, dSPACE offers an end-to-end solution for testing and validating the autonomous vehicle stack.

AURELION generates photorealistic images for camera simulation in real time and an exact environment for radar and lidar simulation using ray tracing.
