RouteAI project: AI for efficient route and charge planning for electric cars

The development of a digital assistance system for efficient route and charging planning for electric vehicles, including a dynamic reservation process, is the focus of the innovation project “RouteAI”. Four partners – effective WEBWORK GmbH, Hubject GmbH, Fraunhofer IFAM, and Steinbeis Innovation gGmbH – are working together on the project, which is funded with a total volume of around 740,000 euros from the Central Innovation Program for SMEs (ZIM).

The aim of the “RouteAI” research project is to develop an app-based, cross-provider assistant that dynamically takes on the additional work of searching for charging stations before and during the journey. Using artificial intelligence (AI), the assistant finds and selects the optimal route, taking into account vehicle range, driving and charging times, charging point availability, traffic situation and personal preferences. The digital route assistant links all static and dynamic information to select the optimal combination of charging stations and route, as well as reserving the charging stations to be approached in advance for a specific period of time.

The digital assistant ensures that all relevant information and any necessary changes are communicated to the user in good time and in a comprehensible and clear form. On the user side, this can lead to a significant improvement in route planning for electric vehicles. On the part of charging station operators and electromobility providers, it can also help to optimize charging point utilization.

The idea for the “RouteAI” project arose within the framework of the innovation network MOWAI – Network for Digital and AI-supported Mobility Systems, which is funded by the Central Innovation Program for SMEs (ZIM). In the course of membership, the partners are actively supported in the realization of R&D projects and in securing funding. MOWAI is managed by IWS GmbH, which also takes over the application management of the cooperation projects and intensively supports the members in the development of new technologies.
