Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH and Mercedes-Benz AG are nominated in the category CO2 Efficiency for the MATERIALICA Award 2021

Congrats to Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH and Mercedes-Benz AG . Your product “CO2-reduzierter Stahl aus Salzgitter” is nominated in the category CO2 Efficiency for the MATERIALICA Award 2021. I cross my fingers! Alexander Redenius

Customer interest in steel products with the lowest possible CO2 footprint has risen steadily in recent years. In 2015, Salzgitter AG developed SALCOS (Salzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking) as a long-term sustainable solution for low-CO2 steel production. As its large-scale use requires a massive restructuring of conventional steel production and suitable regulatory framework conditions and will not be available until 2025, the Group company Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH, together with the Group’s sister company Peiner Träger GmbH (PTG), qualified low-CO2 flat steel production based on scrap via the electric arc furnace route at the end of 2020. The first customers have been supplied with the up to 75% CO2-reduced steel products since 2021. Mercedes-Benz is the first OEM to use Salzgitter Flachstahl’s low-CO2 steel in the Body in White of the C- and E-Class.
