Approval as ATO: Volocopter may train its own pilots

Volocopter develops electrically powered air cabs that will add the 3rd dimension to urban mobility. As the first eVTOL company to receive Design Organization Approval (DOA) from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) back in 2019 and with more than ten years of development experience, Volocopter is considered the market leader in this segment. Today, Volocopter announced that the company has been approved as a training organization (ATO) by the German Federal Aviation Authority (LBA) through its subsidiary Volocopter Air Services. This means that Volocopter can now train pilots on its own aircraft. This makes the company the first developer of electric take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOL) to be approved as an ATO.

Throughout the past year, the German Federal Aviation Authority has been checking whether the company is able to implement and comply with the regulations required for the creation and execution of training programs for the corresponding aircraft. On the basis of this approval, the company can now complete the specific training program for the VoloCity in close cooperation with the Federal Aviation Office. The aim is to prepare for the commercial introduction of electric air cabs with pilot training before the end of this year and to implement the new regulations for the operation and pilot licensing of eVTOL aircraft that have just been published by EASA. The granting of the ATO is also an elementary step on the way to obtaining the Air Operator Certificate, which will enable the company to operate electric air cabs commercially this year immediately after the type certification of the VoloCity.
