eMove360° traveltip: Val Gardena – Certified Sustainability in Tourism

Val Gardena has received the GSTC certificate for sustainable tourism. With the internationally recognized label, the popular vacation valley in the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites commits to apply the standard of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). The GSTC is an organization for the promotion of sustainability and social responsibility in tourism and was founded in 2007 by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The certificate was awarded in Italy after an auditing process by Vireo, the only certifier accredited by GSTC in Italy. In addition to providing a lot of data and calculations, visits and interviews with various institutions and companies were used to assess whether the required criteria were met. Beyond the criteria required by the GSTC, Val Gardena itself pursues ambitious climate goals to be achieved by 2026.

The certification also marks the official start of a long-term plan by Val Gardena to increase its commitment to sustainable tourism in the areas of environmental protection, social responsibility and hospitality. As early as 2020, a working group consisting of representatives from various interest groups, professional associations and Val Gardena communities was founded to raise awareness among guests and residents of Val Gardena about sustainability through events and initiatives under the motto “Respect the Dolomites”. These include sports events such as the Sellaronda Bike Day, the valorization of local handicrafts through the label “Made in – DOLOMITES Val Gardena – with LOVE”, the protection of alpine pastures, free mobility for guests and the use of clean energy.

E-charging station doubling, e-bikes, expansion of renewable energies.

Gardena/Gröden’s ambitious climate goals until 2026 include the establishment of a mobility center to plan projects for more car-free and barrier-free connections, the reduction of traffic and the expansion of bike paths, also on the pass roads, the doubling of e-charging stations and the expansion of renewable energy sources for businesses. www.valgardena.it/de/respect-the-dolomites
