TriFinity: Schaeffler develops a three-row bearing for e-mobility

Innovative bearing solutions play a key role in sustainable mobility because they make powertrains and chassis systems more efficient. With electrified vehicles, every energy saving means more range. Each bearing point thus becomes the focus of vehicle development and offers greater customer benefit through friction optimization. With the three-row wheel bearing TriFinity and the high-performance ball bearing with centrifugal disc, the global automotive and industrial supplier Schaeffler is presenting further product innovations especially for e-vehicles.

Three rows for maximum modularity

Compared to a standard bearing with two rows of balls, the TriFinity enables a higher axle load to be transmitted with a significantly higher service life and rigidity without changing the bearing dimensions. Furthermore, preloaded tapered roller bearing units can be replaced with this innovative ball bearing design. Switching from tapered roller to ball results in a significant improvement in frictional torque and stiffness, resulting in a 0.7 percent reduction in power consumption per vehicle in the FTP75 cycle. The combination with the Schaeffler spur gearing and the TriFinity enables downsizing solutions and thus wheel bearing units with smaller diameters, which leads to less bearing and seal friction, optimized bearing weight and an improved CO2 footprint. With the same bearing dimensions, the backlash-free spur gearing enables transmission of up to 50 percent more drive torque with less weight, easier assembly and reduced noise development for electric vehicles.

High-performance ball bearings for more efficiency and maximum service life

With the new high-performance ball bearing with centrifugal disc, Schaeffler offers a highly efficient, friction-optimized, and sustainable bearing for e-mobility applications. This combines the advantages of an open bearing with those of a sealed bearing. With a friction reduction of 0.3 Nm and a CO2 reduction of around 0.1g/km per bearing, the high-performance ball bearing with centrifugal disc is a simple and smart solution with a major impact on overall performance. Compared to an open bearing, the life of the high-performance ball bearing is increased by 10 times, while at the same time the cost could be reduced.
